ISLAMABAD — Electricity consumers across Pakistan may face an additional burden as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has sought a Rs1.73 per unit increase under the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism for August.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is scheduled to hear the CPPA's request on September 29.
According to the application, 14.464 billion units of electricity were supplied to distribution companies during August at an average cost of Rs8.82 per unit. The proposed adjustment would also apply to K-Electric consumers.
Hydropower accounted for 37.84 per cent of electricity generation during the month, while local coal contributed 10.88 per cent and imported coal 15.59 per cent. Furnace oil accounted for 2.15 per cent, local gas 7.04 per cent and imported LNG 8.48 per cent of generation.
The proposed increase is part of the monthly fuel cost adjustment process and will only become applicable if approved by NEPRA following the scheduled hearing.
Consumers would therefore have to wait for the regulator's decision before any additional amount is reflected in electricity bills.
