LAHORE — Police arrested Aleema Khan, sister of jailed former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, at her residence in Lahore on Sunday, ahead of the party’s planned protest march to Islamabad on September 27.
According to a notification issued by the Lahore district administration, Aleema Khan has been detained for 30 days. The notification cited intelligence reports and stated that her presence at public places could pose a threat to public safety.
The PTI has announced a protest march towards Islamabad next week, with the party demanding the release of Imran Khan.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said on Saturday that the government would take measures to prevent the planned protest march.
PTI leaders have criticised Aleema Khan’s arrest. Zulfi Bukhari, a close aide to Imran Khan, described the detention as unjustified and linked it to the upcoming September 27 mobilisation.
The arrest comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the PTI’s planned march, with authorities and the opposition party taking opposing positions over the proposed demonstration.
