MULTAN— Employees of Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) staged a protest sit-in outside the Administration Block on Monday against what they described as years of delay in promotions across several administrative cadres. The demonstration was organised by the BZU Employees’ Union and attended by Union President Malik Safdar, General Secretary Rana Mudassir Mushtaq, and a large number of employees.
The protesters alleged that promotion cases in various administrative cadres had remained pending for years, causing financial losses and hindering the career progression of eligible employees. They claimed that despite repeated assurances, the administration had failed to resolve the issue. However, these allegations could not be independently verified.
Union leaders said the prolonged delays had negatively affected employees’ professional growth and described the situation as a serious administrative concern.
The union particularly highlighted the promotion cases of stenographers, assistants, senior clerks, junior clerks and administrative officers, alleging that many eligible employees had been waiting for promotions for years, while some had retired without receiving them. According to the union, two serving stenographers had completed PhD degrees, but their promotion cases were still pending.
The protesters demanded that the Vice Chancellor and the relevant authorities immediately convene promotion committees, announce a clear timetable for deciding pending cases, and process promotions strictly on the basis of seniority, eligibility, merit and the applicable university rules.
Addressing the gathering, Union President Malik Safdar warned that the protest movement would continue until the employees’ demands were met. He said the union could consider further action, including locking administrative offices, if concrete steps were not taken.
The university administration has not issued any official statement on the matter so far.
