The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency has opened an easypaisa inquiry into the spread of allegedly misleading and false social media content targeting easypaisa bank limited over the past two weeks.
The complaint was submitted by Naresh Kumar Aruwani, Head of Country Litigation at the bank, who has sought legal action against individuals accused of creating and amplifying content that, according to the bank, was intended to weaken public confidence in the institution.
Sources say the matter has been assigned to a senior officer at the NCCIA, with proceedings initiated under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016, to identify those involved in producing and circulating the disputed material.
The complaint alleges that certain influencers and digital creators shared exaggerated claims about the bank’s financial stability and continuity of operations, triggering unnecessary concern among customers and encouraging fund withdrawals.
easypaisa bank limited has rejected those claims, describing them as false, baseless and misleading. The bank said its services remain fully operational and customer deposits are secure, while reaffirming that it continues to function as a regulated financial institution under the State Bank of Pakistan.
Mr Aruwani said the deliberate spread of false information against a regulated bank can damage not only the institution itself but also confidence in Pakistan’s wider banking ecosystem. He added that easypaisa remains financially strong and expects the authorities to take appropriate legal action.
The bank also clarified that some digital services faced temporary technical disruption during the relevant period, but said the issue was operational in nature, was resolved quickly, and did not affect customer funds or overall financial stability.
As Pakistan’s first mobile wallet launched in 2008 and now serving more than 60 million registered users, easypaisa said it remains committed to financial inclusion, customer protection and operational resilience. It urged customers to rely on official communication and verified regulatory updates while the easypaisa inquiry continues.
