LAHORE — Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Pakistan will launch the third phase of its nationwide protest movement against the petroleum levy on Friday, October 23, on the directives of party Ameer Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, the party’s spokesperson said.
As part of the campaign, protest sit-ins will be held in all districts across the country. The spokesperson said the abolition of the petroleum levy was the party’s primary demand, adding that a nationwide signature campaign was also underway and protests would intensify if the government failed to provide relief to the public.
Regarding a proposed meeting between Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the spokesperson said Ahsan Iqbal, head of the government’s committee, and senior government figure Rana Sanaullah had contacted JI Deputy Ameer Liaquat Baloch with a message from the prime minister proposing a meeting.
It was agreed that committees representing the government and Jamaat-e-Islami would meet to finalise the schedule. However, the spokesperson said no further communication had been received from the government.
The spokesperson added that Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman had made it clear that the abolition of the petroleum levy would be the central agenda of any meeting with the prime minister.
The party warned that if the government continued to delay action and failed to provide relief to the public, the movement would continue nationwide, with further decisions to be taken through public protests.
