Report: ANI Correspondent:

ISLAMABAD — A meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Defence, chaired by Senator Talha Mahmood, was held at Parliament House, with Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi attending as a special invitee.

The committee was briefed by the Secretary Defence and Civil Aviation Authority Pakistan on flight delays and the situation at Jinnah International Airport Karachi. The Secretary Defence said the factors behind the airport’s current condition needed to be examined and informed the committee that improvement measures were underway.

The Secretary Defence invited senators to visit Karachi Airport to review the ongoing measures and assess its previous and current condition.

The committee was informed that since the aviation sector came under the Ministry of Defence on February 4, 2025, various steps had been taken to improve airports and aviation services. Flight operations to several airports in Balochistan have increased, while night-flight facilities have also been introduced at some airports.

The committee was also briefed on the need for major renovation and a new terminal at Peshawar Airport. At Gilgit Airport, runway and lighting systems have been upgraded, while plans are underway to induct additional aircraft.

Governor Faisal Karim Kundi called for improved domestic air routes, including direct connections from Peshawar to Swat and Lahore. He also urged restoration of Dera Ismail Khan Airport and resumption of commercial flights.
