MITHI: An awareness session for rural women was held in Mithi to mark the International Day of Rural Women, under the leadership of Manmeet Kumar, Assistant Director of the Women Development Department, Tharparkar, in collaboration with the Social Cooperation Initiative (SCI).

The session highlighted the contributions of rural women to family welfare, agriculture and social development, while raising awareness about their legal rights, protection and access to support services.

Addressing the participants, Manmeet Kumar said rural women played a vital role in Pakistan’s agricultural economy, social development and household management. He stressed that ensuring their access to education, healthcare, employment and essential facilities, while protecting their rights and promoting economic independence, was crucial for sustainable development.

He noted that rural women made significant contributions to agriculture, livestock rearing, household responsibilities and other economic activities. Despite their hard work, he added, many continued to face social and economic challenges that limited their opportunities and overall well-being.

Kumar called for stronger coordination among government departments, social organisations and other relevant stakeholders to ensure equal opportunities for women, improve their skills and expand employment prospects through technical and vocational training.

He also urged rural women to prioritise their health by seeking regular medical check-ups and undergoing necessary diagnostic tests to identify potential health issues at an early stage.

Other speakers highlighted the importance of recognising rural women’s contributions, protecting their rights and strengthening their social and economic empowerment. They emphasised that greater awareness, access to essential services and equal opportunities were necessary to improve the lives of women in rural communities.

The session underscored the need for continued efforts to support rural women, address the challenges they face and ensure their meaningful participation in social and economic development.
