ISLAMABAD– The Government of Pakistan has welcomed the Award and Decision on Interim Measures issued by the Court of Arbitration in The Hague concerning the status of the Indus Waters Treaty.
The Court unanimously ruled that India’s decision to place the Indus Waters Treaty in “abeyance” is not permissible under the Treaty or applicable international law, and that the Treaty remains fully in force.
The Court also imposed interim measures concerning the Ratle Hydroelectric Power Project, restricting certain concreting works on the dam wall and power intake structure until 90 days after the Neutral Expert’s final decision, expected in July 2027.
Pakistan said it will carefully examine the Award and Decision once the full documents are published and assess how they can help facilitate renewed engagement between the two parties under the Treaty.
