MANDI BAHAUDDIN: A women’s ward has been established at District Jail Mandi Bahauddin after 48 years, following the personal efforts of Superintendent District Jail Haq Nawaz.
Since the establishment of the jail in 1978, there had been no separate ward for female prisoners, due to which women prisoners from Mandi Bahauddin district were kept at District Jail Gujrat. Keeping their difficulties in view, Superintendent Jail Haq Nawaz took practical steps for the establishment of a dedicated women’s ward.
The initiative was undertaken in line with the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and with the support of IG Prisons Mian Salik Jalal, former IG Mian Farooq Nazir and Punjab Home Secretary.
Following formal approval, female prisoners are now being transferred to District Jail Mandi Bahauddin. The newly established ward has a capacity of 50 female prisoners and will provide separate, secure and improved accommodation.
The jail administration termed the initiative an important step towards prison reforms and the welfare of female prisoners and their families. It also reflects the principle that while crime must be punished, respect for human dignity and fundamental rights remains equally important.
Superintendent Jail Haq Nawaz said providing prisoners with basic facilities according to law and improving the administrative and infrastructure systems of the jail were among his priorities. He expressed hope that the new women’s ward would further improve facilities at the district jail.
