ISLAMABAD–The Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH), in collaboration with Iqra University, organized an awareness session to mobilize students in support of mandatory Front-of-Pack Warning Labels (FOPWLs) on unhealthy food products, amid the rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Pakistan.
Addressing the session, PANAH General Secretary Sana Ullah Ghumman said diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases and other NCDs account for approximately 60 percent of deaths in Pakistan. He highlighted the health risks associated with excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods containing high levels of sugar, salt and unhealthy fats.
Citing international examples, including Chile and Mexico, he urged the government to introduce mandatory front-of-pack warning labels without further delay. He said consumers had the right to know what they were eating and that clear warning labels could help families make informed food choices.
PANAH Executive Member Abdul Hafeez emphasized the role of young people in promoting public-health reforms, urging students to raise awareness through social media, university platforms and community engagement.
Iqra University Assistant Professor Ms. Maria appreciated PANAH's initiative and stressed the importance of involving educational institutions and students in promoting healthier lifestyles.
The session featured student presentations, an interactive quiz and discussions on healthy food choices and consumer rights.
PANAH reiterated its demand for the immediate enactment and effective implementation of mandatory Front-of-Pack Warning Labels, saying informed consumers and active youth participation were essential for building a healthier Pakistan.
