ISLAMABAD — Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi criticised the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) and Maulana Fazlur Rehman during a Senate session, defending his visit to Iran and rejecting claims that it was aimed at signing a defence agreement.
Addressing the Senate, Naqvi said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had assigned him a special task related to the prevailing crisis and clarified that no defence agreement was the purpose of his visit to Iran.
The minister criticised Maulana Fazlur Rehman over his reported remarks about the state, saying they had changed his personal respect for the JUI-F chief. He also accused political opponents of criticising the state when they no longer received government benefits.
Naqvi said those who criticised the government should also be prepared to hear its response. He further alleged that some people used religion for political and personal gains.
Opposition members created an uproar during his address, while Senator Kamran Murtaza objected to the minister’s choice of words.
