ISLAMABAD — Chairman of the Pakistan Awaami Quwat Party, Khakan Waheed Khawaja, has announced that his party will actively participate in the 2026 local government elections in Islamabad and field candidates in all 125 union councils.
Addressing a party workers’ convention at Rawal Auditorium, Khawaja said the party was treating the Islamabad local government elections as a test case and expressed confidence that it would secure a decisive victory.
The convention was attended by party office-bearers, workers, supporters and delegations representing NA-46, NA-47 and NA-48. Several political and social figures also joined the party, including NA-47 President Babar Hashmi, General Secretary Anjum Ilyas, Raza-ur-Rehman, Shahid Iqbal, Muhammad Ajmal, Awais Ajmal, Maulana Amjad Abbasi, Malik Gulraiz Awan, Umair Mahmood, Bilal Zahid, Chaudhry Sahir Ali, Raja Ishtiaq and Madam Bushra. The party chairman welcomed the new members by presenting them with party flags.
Khawaja said public dissatisfaction with the policies and performance of the ruling party had created an opportunity for his party to gain support in the capital. He added that the party planned to empower elected councillors and collect taxes through them, with the revenue spent on public welfare and community development.
A party song highlighting its manifesto and political narrative was also presented during the convention. Party Secretary General Malik Ejaz Hussain performed the duties of stage secretary.
Professor Umar Hayat, head of the committee established for the local government elections, briefed participants on the rules, procedures and eligibility requirements for contesting the polls.
The convention concluded with a question-and-answer session in which local residents raised various questions and discussed issues related to the upcoming local government elections.
