A Political Journey, Parliamentary Experience and Prospects for the Future

By Ch Shabbir Balochistani : Published by ANI

Pakistan’s political history includes leaders who have risen through established political families and major political parties, as well as figures who have followed less conventional paths to the country’s highest constitutional offices. Mir Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani is one such political figure.

Hailing from Nokundi in Chagai district of Balochistan, Sanjrani gradually built his political profile at both the provincial and federal levels. His journey is notable not only for his personal political rise but also for the representation of Balochistan in Pakistan’s national parliamentary institutions.

His early political experience included working in 1998 as a coordinator with the team of then Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif. The experience provided him exposure to federal affairs, political coordination and government institutions.

The defining phase of his political career came in 2018, when he was elected Senator from Balochistan and, on March 12, 2018, became Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan. He was the first politician from Balochistan to hold the office and, at the age of 39, one of the youngest individuals to lead the Upper House.

His election carried particular significance for Balochistan, a province whose political representation, development needs and role in national decision-making have remained important issues in Pakistan’s political discourse.

Sanjrani’s first tenure also brought political challenges. In 2019, a no-confidence motion was moved against him, but it failed to secure the required majority in the secret ballot.

In March 2021, he was elected Chairman Senate for a second term, defeating former Prime Minister and veteran parliamentarian Yousaf Raza Gilani. His re-election came amid intense political competition and polarization.

During his tenure, the Senate continued its constitutional role in legislation, provincial representation and parliamentary dialogue, alongside parliamentary diplomacy and international engagement.

Sanjrani also maintained political communication with different stakeholders, an approach that has remained a notable feature of his political career.

In 2024, his political journey entered another phase when he was elected to the Balochistan Assembly, marking his return to provincial politics after several years at the helm of the Senate.

This transition presents a new challenge: how to translate his federal and parliamentary experience into a broader political role in Balochistan.

The province faces challenges involving education, healthcare, employment, youth opportunities, mineral resources, law and order, political representation and federal-provincial relations. Effective engagement between Quetta and Islamabad remains important for addressing these issues.

Sanjrani’s experience gives him a distinctive political background. He has worked within federal politics, led the Senate, interacted with political forces across party lines and remained connected with Balochistan’s political landscape.

The future significance of his political career will depend on how he uses this experience. His ability to contribute to dialogue, represent provincial concerns at the national level and build political consensus will be closely observed.

Pakistan’s political system continues to require parliamentary dialogue and engagement among competing political forces. For Sanjrani, the next phase of his career therefore represents an opportunity to build upon his previous constitutional experience while focusing on the political and developmental concerns of Balochistan.

His election as Chairman Senate twice, his distinction as the first politician from Balochistan to hold the office, and his subsequent return to the Balochistan Assembly represent important chapters of his political journey.

The next chapter will depend on his future political choices and priorities.

For Balochistan, the central question is how effectively its political leadership can bring provincial concerns into national policymaking while strengthening dialogue between the federation and the province.

Sadiq Sanjrani’s political career has already taken him from provincial politics to the leadership of Pakistan’s Upper House and back to the provincial legislature. His experience now provides him with an opportunity to contribute to the next phase of Balochistan’s political and national discourse.
