ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Thursday reintroduced austerity and fuel-conservation measures, directing markets and commercial establishments to close by 9pm as part of efforts to conserve fuel amid renewed regional tensions.
According to a Cabinet Division notification, the measures will take effect immediately and remain in force for three months.
Shops, markets, shopping malls, bazaars, departmental stores, grocery stores, general stores and other retail establishments have been directed to close by 9pm throughout the week.
The government has also reduced fuel allocations for official vehicles by 50 per cent for the three-month period.
The measures are aimed at reducing fuel consumption and limiting government expenditure amid pressure from higher energy costs and uncertainty in international oil supplies.
The notification also includes restrictions concerning government spending and official activities as part of the broader austerity drive.
The government has urged relevant authorities and departments to ensure implementation of the measures.
The move comes as Pakistan remains vulnerable to fluctuations in international oil prices because of its dependence on imported energy.
The new restrictions are expected to affect business operating hours across the country, particularly retail markets and shopping centres.
