ISLAMABAD — The Senate Standing Committee on Law and Justice, chaired by Senator Farooq H. Naek, on Friday reviewed the performance of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), stressing that the Bureau should focus on mega corruption cases while smaller cases should be handled by the FIA, provincial anti-corruption departments and other relevant agencies.
The Committee expressed concern over the lack of visible action in major corruption cases and emphasized that accountability must be fair, transparent and applied uniformly across all public institutions.
NAB Chairman briefed the Committee on institutional reforms, including a mechanised monitoring system to prevent harassment, reduced use of arrest warrants, and the establishment of a Business Facilitation Desk. He also proposed reviewing the Rs.500 million jurisdictional threshold for NAB.
The Committee also directed the Ministry of Law and Justice to rationalise the number of NAB courts in several cities and decided to continue reviewing NAB’s performance and accountability reforms at its next meeting.
