DUSHANBE—-The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a landmark resolution titled “International Decade of Strengthening of Peace for Future Generations,” an initiative proposed by President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon. The resolution proclaims the period from 2027 to 2036 as the International Decade of Strengthening Peace for Future Generations, reaffirming the global commitment to peace, dialogue, reconciliation, and intergenerational solidarity. The resolution recalls the principles of the UN Charter, including the determination to save future generations from the scourge of war and the commitment to resolve disputes through peaceful means. It also recognizes the importance of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace as a universal framework for promoting peace and non violence.Under the resolution, the Decade aims to strengthen peace, encourage dialogue and reconciliation, and enhance engagement among children, youth, and older persons to ensure that the interests of future generations are reflected in policymaking and decision making processes. The General Assembly welcomed the efforts of Member States, leaders, and communities that have promoted peace, reconciliation, national unity, and post conflict recovery through inclusive political processes and confidence building measures. It noted that these experiences provide valuable lessons and inspiration for future generations. The resolution also welcomed commitments made during the 2024 Summit of the Future and the adoption of the Pact for the Future, under which UN Member States pledged to strengthen cooperation for the benefit of future generations. It further highlighted positive developments in Central Asia, particularly the peaceful resolution of border issues and the signing of related agreements by Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. The document requests the UN Secretary General, specialized agencies, regional commissions, and other UN bodies to support implementation of the Decade in cooperation with governments and relevant stakeholders. Member States, civil society organizations, and development partners have also been invited to contribute by sharing knowledge, expertise, and best practices. The adoption of the resolution comes at a time when millions of civilians around the world continue to suffer from armed conflicts and security challenges. Tajikistan described the initiative as a reflection of its longstanding commitment to peacebuilding, national unity, and international cooperation.Officials also emphasized that the initiative carries special significance for Tajikistan, whose people experienced the devastation of civil war and continue to value peace, political stability, and national unity, making the resolution both timely and globally relevant.
