ISLAMABAD– President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari has extended warm congratulations to President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria Abdelmadjid Tebboune and the brotherly people of Algeria on their National Day, marking the 72nd anniversary of the beginning of the historic Algerian liberation revolution.
In his message, President Zardari said the courage and sacrifices of the Algerian people remained an inspiration to all those who cherished freedom, dignity and independence.
He recalled Pakistan’s strong support for Algeria during its struggle against colonial rule, noting that Pakistan recognised Algeria’s provisional government in 1958, even before the country achieved independence, reflecting the deep-rooted solidarity between the two nations.
The President highlighted the historic political and personal ties between Pakistan and Algeria, recalling Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s friendship with Algerian leaders Ahmed Ben Bella and Houari Boumediene, which helped strengthen bilateral relations.
He also paid tribute to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto for carrying forward this friendship, recalling her visit to Algeria in July 1990 and meeting with then President Chadli Bendjedid.
President Zardari said these longstanding ties represented both a national inheritance and a cherished family legacy, continuing to guide cooperation between the two countries at the United Nations and other international forums.
He emphasised that Pakistan and Algeria shared a commitment to the UN Charter, sovereign equality of states, the right to self-determination and the peaceful settlement of disputes. He also referred to the cooperation between the two countries during their overlapping membership of the UN Security Council in 2025.
The President reaffirmed Pakistan and Algeria’s united support for the Palestinian people’s right to freedom and an independent state, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. He stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to resolve conflicts, protect civilians and achieve lasting peace in West Asia.
Expressing his desire to further strengthen bilateral relations, President Zardari said he looked forward to working with President Tebboune to expand cooperation in trade, investment, energy, education and culture.
He said the two countries owed it to the generations that had built their relationship to transform their historic solidarity into greater opportunities for their peoples.
President Zardari wished President Abdelmadjid Tebboune good health and happiness and the people of Algeria continued peace, progress and prosperity.
