MUZAFFARABAD: Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Iftikhar Gilani has described October 27, 1947, as the darkest day in Kashmir’s contemporary history, accusing India of forcibly occupying part of the region in violation of the principles of partition and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
In his message on Kashmir Black Day, Gilani said the Kashmir dispute should be resolved in accordance with United Nations resolutions calling for a plebiscite to allow Kashmiris to determine their political future.
He said Kashmiris on both sides of the Ceasefire Line and across the world observe October 27 to protest against what Pakistan describes as India’s illegal occupation. He also expressed concern over alleged human rights violations, political repression and restrictions on fundamental freedoms in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
Referring to the post-August 5, 2019, situation, Gilani accused India of attempting to change the region’s demographic composition and suppress Kashmiri identity. He urged the international community to support the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.
Reaffirming his government’s support, the AJK premier expressed confidence that the Kashmiri people would ultimately achieve their aspirations for freedom and justice.
