Karachi: Alliance Française de Karachi (AFK) hosted French freestyle duo Lobo EL and Cotchei bringing rap-impro to Pakistan for the first time. Held with the support of the Embassy of France in Pakistan, the concert drew a packed crowd to AFK's Clifton campus for a night of unscripted rap, breakdance and cultural exchange.
Rap-impro is competitive freestyle rap, composed and delivered live with no written material. Lobo EL, the 2019 World Champion of rap-impro, and his performing partner Cotchei are known across France's freestyle scene for building full songs on the spot, with no prepared lines.
Emmanuel Breurec, Director of Alliance Française de Karachi, opened the evening, introducing MC Taishi, founder of Our Culture and Pakistan's National Breaking Champion, alongside Lobo EL and Cotchei.
"This was an exchange of cultures," said Breurec. "We wanted to show Karachi a side of French culture beyond the classroom, something raw, live, and unscripted. Rap-impro proves that young generations everywhere have something to say, and something to share."
Lobo EL and Cotchei greeted the crowd with basic Urdu phrases, opened with a freestyle thanking AFK for the opportunity, and pulled the audience into a call and response, shouting "limoon" (lemon) in Urdu and getting back "adrak" (ginger). They performed original songs, invited local rap artists up for an open mic, and Taishi closed the night with a breakdance performance that had the crowd cheering. Lobo EL gave one of his own albums to an audience member as a keepsake.
