ISLAMABAD — National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, addressing the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Cape Town, called for stronger parliamentary leadership, democratic accountability and international cooperation to tackle the challenges posed by climate change.
During his address, he referred, without naming any country or delegation, to issues related to sudden water flows in rivers and the withholding of water, highlighting the wider impact of water-related challenges.
During the speech, members of the Indian delegation reportedly interrupted proceedings, prompting the Chair to call for order. Later, the Jamaican Speaker and host of the meeting intervened and took the microphone from a member of the Indian delegation who was speaking.
Despite the interruptions, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq continued his address, stressing the need for climate justice, equitable financial support and parliamentary oversight of climate-related policies and international climate finance.
He said Pakistan is among the countries severely affected by climate change, which is impacting food security, water availability and public health. He highlighted the role of Parliament in legislation, budgetary oversight and ensuring implementation of climate commitments.
The Speaker also called for the inclusion of women, youth and other segments of society in climate action and urged Commonwealth parliaments to share experiences and best practices to strengthen resilience.
