ISLAMABAD — National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has said promoting democratic values and strengthening democratic institutions are essential for Pakistan’s sustainable development, stressing that a strong democratic system guarantees a prosperous and stable future.

In his message on the International Day of Democracy, observed on September 15, he said democracy was based on freedom, equality, public participation and collective decision-making.

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said respect for the public mandate, transparency, accountability and the rule of law were essential for a strong democracy. He paid tribute to political leaders and workers who had sacrificed for the restoration and strengthening of democracy in Pakistan.

He described Parliament as a cornerstone of democracy and said elected representatives were responsible for legislation, public welfare and addressing people’s problems. He stressed that political differences should be resolved through dialogue, tolerance and consultation rather than confrontation.

The Speaker also called for greater participation of women, youth, minorities and all segments of society in political and parliamentary processes. He urged political forces to rise above differences, uphold the Constitution and work together on issues of national importance.

Deputy Speaker

Deputy Speaker Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah said democracy guaranteed people’s political freedoms, while a strong Parliament, constitutional supremacy and rule of law were essential for Pakistan’s development and stability.

He paid tribute to Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto for their sacrifices for democracy and called for resolving political differences through dialogue and parliamentary mechanisms.
