ISLAMABAD: A dinner was hosted by Salma Barkat in honour of Democracy Group Chairman Agha Shiraz Basharat, the group’s candidates and members of the Islamabad business community in connection with the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) elections.
Addressing the gathering, Agha Shiraz Basharat said the business community must rise above group differences and personal interests and focus on the collective rights and interests of traders.
He said the Chamber of Commerce was an institution representing the entire business community and called for greater unity, consultation and democratic traditions among traders.
Agha Shiraz said traders were facing serious challenges due to rising taxes, electricity and gas costs and government policies. He urged the business community to jointly raise its issues with the government.
“Our struggle is not against any individual; it is for the rights of traders. Whoever stands for the unity, dignity and rights of the business community, the Central Organisation of Traders of Pakistan will stand with them,” he said.
Democracy Group Secretary-General Mirza Nasir Yaqoob urged traders to use their votes wisely and support the group’s candidates to bring positive change to the chamber.
Other trader leaders and speakers also stressed greater unity and coordination to safeguard the interests of Islamabad’s business community.
