ISLAMABAD — Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said collective efforts through formal, non-formal and technical education can transform Pakistan’s 150 million youth into skilled national assets.
Addressing an International Literacy Day event, he called Pakistan’s low literacy rate a major challenge and proposed using the country’s extensive network of mosques as short-duration educational centres between Ishraq and Dhuhr prayers.
Siddiqui stressed the need for a unified national strategy involving government institutions, educational organizations and civil society to bring out-of-school children and youth into the education system.
JICA, UNICEF, UNESCO, NCHD and Allama Iqbal Open University representatives also reaffirmed their commitment to expanding alternative and quality education.
Provincial representatives highlighted progress in literacy and enrollment, while stressing continued efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children across the country.
