Report: ANI :
SRINAGAR — Chairman Ittehad-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir, Syed Manzoor Ahmed Shah, has expressed concern over what he described as continuing human rights violations in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, warning that prolonged restrictions, arrests and alleged abuses could increase international pressure on India and lead to calls for targeted sanctions against individuals found responsible.
In a statement, Shah alleged that recent developments in Srinagar, Doda, Poonch and Rajouri had included civilian casualties, injuries, arrests, alleged enforced disappearances, communication restrictions and curbs on press freedom. He called for independent investigations into allegations of human rights violations and greater transparency regarding detainees and missing persons.
He also referred to the cases of Engineer Abdul Rashid Sheikh, an elected Member of Parliament from Baramulla, and Malik Meraj, an elected representative from Doda, while alleging prolonged imprisonment and political restrictions against Kashmiri leaders and activists.
Shah cited the United Nations human rights reports of June 2018 and July 2019 and said international attention to the situation in Jammu and Kashmir had continued to grow. He urged India to ensure due process, protect freedom of the press and conduct impartial investigations into allegations of excessive use of force.
He further pointed to existing human rights sanctions mechanisms in the United Kingdom and European Union, arguing that credible evidence of serious violations could potentially lead to targeted measures against individuals rather than comprehensive sanctions against the Indian population.
According to Shah, such measures could include asset freezes and travel restrictions against individuals found responsible for serious human rights abuses. He stressed that any international accountability process should focus on those allegedly responsible rather than ordinary citizens.
The chairman urged the Indian government to pursue dialogue, uphold civil rights and ensure transparent investigations, warning that continued use of force and restrictions could result in increased diplomatic pressure and international scrutiny.
Shah said the Kashmir issue had increasingly become a matter of international human rights concern and called for a political approach based on dialogue, rule of law, accountability and protection of fundamental rights.
