According to the World Health Organization (WHO), viral hepatitis is among the leading causes of death worldwide. Pakistan has one of the highest burdens of Hepatitis C (HCV) globally, making it a major public health challenge.

Hepatitis is the medical term for inflammation of the liver. The liver is one of the most vital organs in the human body. It filters the blood, aids digestion, stores energy, and performs many essential metabolic functions. When the liver becomes inflamed or damaged, its ability to perform these functions is significantly affected.

The most common cause of hepatitis is infection with hepatitis viruses. Other causes include excessive alcohol consumption, the use of certain drugs or medications, autoimmune diseases, and exposure to harmful toxins. In Pakistan, the most common types are Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.

Other major liver diseases include:

– Jaundice: Yellowing of the skin and eyes.
– Fatty Liver Disease: Excess accumulation of fat in the liver.
– Hepatitis: Inflammation of the liver caused by viral or non-viral factors.
– Cirrhosis: Permanent scarring of the liver that impairs its function.

Prevention

Protecting your liver requires healthy lifestyle choices and timely medical care. The following measures can significantly reduce the risk of hepatitis and other liver diseases:

– Get vaccinated against Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B. There is currently no vaccine available for Hepatitis C.
– Avoid sharing needles, razors, toothbrushes, or other personal items that may come into contact with blood.
– Ensure that blood transfusions and medical procedures use properly screened blood and sterile equipment.
– Eat a balanced diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables.
– Drink safe, clean water and stay well hydrated.
– Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy body weight.
– Avoid excessive alcohol consumption and the use of illicit drugs.
– Consult your healthcare provider for regular screening and early treatment if you are at risk.

On World Hepatitis Day, let us raise awareness, promote prevention, encourage early diagnosis, and support timely treatment to eliminate hepatitis as a public health threat.
