Women University Mardan has marked a notable academic achievement with the completion of microalgae wastewater research by Ms. Khadija in the Department of Biotechnology under the supervision of Dr. Hina Jabeen. The project, titled “Synergistic Effect of Microalgae and Bacteria for the Remediation of Domestic Wastewater,” explored an environmentally friendly way to treat domestic wastewater using biological processes.
The study examined how microalgae and beneficial bacteria work together to remove pollutants and excess nutrients from wastewater. According to the findings, this combined system shows strong potential as a cost-effective alternative to conventional treatment methods, especially in communities where resources are limited and sustainable solutions are urgently needed.
Beyond improving water quality, the research also highlighted the value of the biomass produced during the process. That biomass may have practical uses in agriculture and bioenergy, adding further relevance to the project’s environmental and economic impact. The work is being seen as an encouraging step toward cleaner water reuse, reduced pollution, and support for sustainable development efforts in Pakistan.
The department acknowledged the support of Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Razia Sultana, whose leadership has encouraged research and innovation at the university. Appreciation was also extended to Dr. Hina Jabeen for her guidance throughout the project and to Dr. Nadia Sharif for technical assistance in microalgal identification.
To recognize the achievement, the department arranged a cake-cutting ceremony attended by faculty members, students, the Director Academics, and the Additional Director Quality Enhancement Cell. The gathering reflected the academic value of the work and its possible future applications, including practical use and commercialization prospects.
Faculty at the Department of Biotechnology congratulated Ms. Khadija on completing the project and reaffirmed their commitment to research that supports scientific progress, environmental protection, and community development through microalgae wastewater research.
