KARACHI — The Karachi Council on Foreign Relations (KCFR) hosted the launch of *Ukraine War: Beyond the Headlines: An Alternative Narrative on the Crisis*, authored by Munir Ahmed, at the Quaid-e-Azam House Museum in Karachi. The event brought together distinguished speakers to discuss the historical roots of the Ukraine conflict, its geopolitical implications and its broader impact on international relations.
KCFR Chairperson Ms. Nadira Panjwani HI, SI, delivered the welcome address, highlighting the importance of informed dialogue on international affairs amid geopolitical changes, propaganda and competing narratives. She said the initiative aimed to encourage meaningful debate on the conflict and its implications for global stability, international cooperation and the emerging world order.
Dr. Huma Baqai discussed the broader geopolitical dimensions of the Ukraine conflict, including the role of major powers, competing security interests and the challenges facing international diplomacy. She also examined the changing global balance of power and its implications for the international system.
Author Munir Ahmed introduced his book, which examines the war from a perspective that challenges conventional Western media narratives. The publication explores the historical relationship between Russia and Ukraine, NATO’s eastward expansion, Russia’s stated security concerns and the role of the United States and other international actors.
The book also examines the wider consequences of the conflict, including disruptions to food and energy supplies, economic pressures and the humanitarian costs of prolonged warfare. Drawing on geopolitical analysis and developments since 2022, the author seeks to encourage readers to look beyond prevailing narratives.
H.E. Andrey Viktorovich Fedorov, Consul General, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the international implications of the conflict and the continuing importance of dialogue and diplomacy in addressing complex global crises.
The programme concluded with the presentation of mementoes, group photographs and refreshments. The event provided an opportunity for interaction among speakers, diplomats, members of the KCFR Board of Governors and invited guests.
